How to do it: You can’t just cut a leaf and expect it to grow. You need a “node”—the small, brownish bump on the stem where leaves and roots emerge. Using clean, sharp scissors, cut the stem about two centimetres below a node. Remove the bottom leaves so they don’t rot in the water, leaving one or two leaves at the top to capture whatever winter sunlight is available. Place the stem in a glass of room-temperature water, ensuring the node is fully submerged.

Now, the slow magic begins. Change the water once a week to keep it oxygenated, and place the glass in a bright, warm spot away from cold drafts.
